Fayemi Declares Intention to Contest 2023 Presidential Election
Statement by His Excellency Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, CON, Governor of Ekiti State and Chair of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum on the Occasion of the Declaration of His Candidature for the Presidential Ticket of the All Progressives Congress
Protocols
- I am highly honoured by your presence here today in such large numbers to participate in this town hall event. Your presence reinforces my personal conviction that we are at a crucial moment in our country’s history – and of the world at large – where we must, as a people, make the choices that will guarantee peace, prosperity and a secure future for our children.
- Trying times such as we are witnessing on a global scale can, if properly managed, be converted into transformational moments that allow both for the achievement of a fundamental national reset and a major leap forward in our affairs.
- The words that I hear from many Nigerians from various walks of life assure me that as a people, guided by the right leadership coalition, we are determined not to allow tough times to lead us into debilitating pessimism. Neither are we ready to forget the gains of six decades of our independent statehood. Instead, we share a strong desire to seize the moment and strive for a wholesome recalibration that enables us to build upward and higher in unity and unison. That is the Nigerian spirit that the world has seen displayed intermittently – and which combines with an uncommon fortitude that allow us to triumph over adversity, anomie, and discontent. It is one reason for hope; it is also partly why, like my fellow travellers, some of whom are here with us in this hall, I am proudly Nigerian and will always remain one.
- My own journey into public life has taught me that while we must never as a people be complacent about our circumstances, there is also no noble project of national advancement that is beyond our grasp when we act as one with a clear vision, courage of conviction and the requisite commitment. I began my journey into the public sphere as a student leader at the University of Lagos at a time in our national history when we were all fired by genuine and well-founded hopes of the heights to which we could soar as a leading actor in global African and world affairs. It was the time in my personal journey when the roots of my unshakable faith were birthed that our future as a nation, and our place in the global comity of nations, resides in the consolidation of our unity and cohesion. For it is out of unity and cohesion that we have always found the strength to transcend all barriers, defend our freedom and dignity, scale new heights, and provide leadership for others – especially Africa.
- Beyond my early forays into the public sphere as a student leader, my abiding faith in the oneness of our country has been further reinforced by all my subsequent engagements in national affairs as a scholar, civil society voice and institution-builder, community and political organiser with an unapologetic pan-Nigerian and pan-African outlook, tireless advocate for human rights and democratic governance, two-term governor, federal minister, a founding Coordinator of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and two-term Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum. I have been privileged to witness first hand, the underlying commitment and sense of solidarity which Nigerians from all parts of the country share about the promise of the fatherland. And it has been my singular honour to have been an active part at various times with other committed compatriots from various walks of life labouring with determination towards rapid and sustained national progress.
- Compatriots, it is in the spirit of this abiding faith in our country and the promise of its unfinished greatness that I stand before you today, in total humility and with all sense of responsibility, to solemnly declare to all within our party and Nigerians at large, my decision to accept my name to be put forward for consideration by the APC leadership and membership as the party’s standard bearer in the upcoming contest for a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari. This is not a decision which I have taken lightly. Indeed, to arrive at this point, I carried out a long and deep self-introspection with the help of my wife, Bisi and other family members, my friends, and my political associates and professional colleagues. I have also traversed the length and breadth of our country to consult and explore with our esteemed elder statesmen and women, traditional rulers, a cross section of party leaders and rank and file members, and various non-partisan leaders of thought and opinion.
- I embarked on these outreach visits neither with prior assumptions about what they would yield nor with any sense of personal entitlement. However, after a careful consideration of where we are as a nation and the many perspectives which are emerging about the challenges, old and new, which we must tackle and transcend, I am convinced that my entry into the race will offer our members and Nigerians the opportunity to examine competing visions for national rebirth in the best interest of our country. It is on the foundation of a clear vision of our national future accompanied by a carefully thought out programme of action that I present my candidature, fully convinced on the basis of what I have experienced, heard, and seen about the demands of the times and the aspirations of our people. It is my conviction that the agenda that I am proposing for our country is one which will find favour with APC members and win resounding traction with the generality of Nigerians.
- Here then is my motivating testament and confession: I am a patriot born in these climes in the course of the first decade of our country’s independence, and I stake a bold claim to say that I am a full-blooded child of Nigeria. I grew up as did many of my generation socialised into the ideals of a united and virile nation. In my lifetime, I have witnessed some heart-warming moments of nation- and state-building that would make any citizen anywhere immeasurably proud. But I have also seen some truly challenging days in our journey of nationhood which have tested our collective resolve and demanded the exercise of considerable political savvy by our leaders over the years. I have taken as a key lesson from the admixture of high and low points we have experienced as a country that when and where we are charitable to one another and allow our shared humanity, innate spirit of solidarity, hard work, perseverance and underlying patriotism to prevail, we always succeed in overcoming and thriving through adversity.
- Fellow Nigerians, that is why on this 4th day in the month of May 2022, before this august assemblage of Nigerians from all walks of life and those watching from all corners of this beautiful land and beyond, I can boldly and confidently say to our party members and the generality of Nigerians: Let us together, as one people, dig deep into our history and our hearts to revive hope and do the work of faith that will positively re-energise our homes and our lives for the common and greater good. Despair is easy to spread. Hope can be daunting to sustain. And faith can be severely shaken. But while the night may be long, the dawn must come – and it always does. That’s why Nigeria is worth fighting and living for. I offer myself as the leadership figure who is willing and primed to work with you, beloved compatriots, to launch and drive the hard work of surmounting difficult times, fostering trust, and building bridges with a view to carrying us in unity, equity, and justice into our new dawn of progress and prosperity.
- Hope such as I offer with my candidature is premised on a shared vision on which we can all agree, and for which we collectively strive, of a nation that is more confidently and uncompromisingly at one with itself, serving as home for all of us regardless of ethnicity, class, gender, age, disability, region or religion. It is a vision of a nation of multiple diversities in which each and every one of us can recognise ourselves in its fabric and workings as equal stakeholders and co-constructors, complete with all the rights, freedoms, and duties provided under the constitution for citizens. The idea and ideal of Nigeria as home to all of us who are its children is one which we can all rally around as a starting point for the unfinished work of national greatness that must be taken to its next phase. To give full effect to this, concrete programmes of action will be launched in priority areas that will allow for a revamping of the credibility of the Nigerian state, the promotion and fulfillment of an enhanced social contract, and the rebirth of the national identity.
- Programmatically, as the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), I will be leading the implementation of a holistic and integrated response to the multifaceted security crises confronting us. To this end, the retooling of our armed forces, intelligence agencies, and border guards will be pursued in tandem with an overhaul of our policing system and the phasing in of bold universal social policies that will enable us decisively tackle poverty and upgrade human capital and security. In this perspective, the deliberate expansion of employment opportunities, youth entrepreneurship, skills development, and innovation, support to the weak and vulnerable such as we have done in Ekiti State for the elderly with Owo arugbo and Ounje arugbo and women’s socio-economic empowerment will be treated as just one dimension of our comprehensive response to the costly security crises that have destabilised us, as will the pursuit of broad welfare policies that are embedded into a new state-society bargain and the empowerment of citizens.
- The adoption of broad socio-economic measures that enhance our capacity to fight insecurity must be done at the same time as investments in reinforcing the deterrent capacity of the state through its armed forces, security agencies, and policing authorities. Authority and legitimacy coupled with deterrence and rapid response go hand in hand, just as we must better design and interface economic policies with broad social objectives and goals of political inclusivity towards a well-defined outcome, namely, the sustained peace, stability, and progress of our country. Let there be no doubt: For the economy to serve broader social and political purposes that enhance human and state security, stem poverty, and promote national prosperity, my agenda for Nigeria encompasses attention to questions of productivity, diversification, domestic value addition, investments in and incentives for research, development, and innovation, and the expansion of domestic revenue mobilisation, among others.
- Considerable work is already ongoing on the upgrading and expansion of our infrastructure and one of my prime objectives would be to accelerate this both through public investments and partnerships with the private sector whilst simultaneously ensuring that we enforce accountability and get much greater value for money. By the same token, a major rescue and investment programme for the education sector, the health system, the civil service, and the local government system will be launched to re-orient each of them for the task of overall national development, progress and prosperity. Each of these domains can benefit much more from a deliberate and systematic deployment of digital technologies as appropriate to their context; the opportunities will be followed through as an integral part of our programme of rebirth.
- I fully understand that we cannot secure our prosperity without ensuring that our agricultural sector is able to deliver self-sufficiency in critical food markets, feed our efforts at agro-allied industrialisation and thus meaningfully enable the transformation of the unemployed into gainful employment, reinvigorate the rural areas, foster the coordinated expansion of commodity exchanges, and boost the flow of foreign exchange into the economy. We will prioritise the sector for the multiple benefits it can bring to the agenda of national prosperity and transformation that we will be pursing with unrelenting vigour. As part of this commitment, issues of streamlined and transparent access to agricultural finance, and the expanded adoption of agricultural technology by farming populations will rank high in the priority areas for focus.
- No vision of national prosperity however impeccable or programme of national transformation however comprehensive can deliver the outcomes desired without attention to the planning system of government writ large. We must build on recent successes in restoring our national planning system and statistical capacity in order to open new, forward-looking approaches to development management that is research and data driven. This will form an integral part of the new elan that we will be bringing to governance as a whole, driven by a philosophy of efficient service delivery, the enthronement of a civic culture, and the encouragement of an empowered citizenry to engage with public affairs understanding that it is the repository of power. As part of this commitment, a holistic approach to decentralisation will be embraced and institutionalised so that government and its services are brought closer to the people. Our programme of decentralisation will also feed into the goals of a stronger, more united, and stable Nigeria, outcomes which are not only good for our domestic prospects but which will also benefit West Africa, the rest of the African continent, and a troubled international multilateral system.
- Friends and compatriots! I have, for this occasion, shared just a few snippets of what I hope will be the core of the Nigeria agenda under my watch. The die is now cast. I embark on this journey with a determination to play my part to the end. I do so buoyed by your many good wishes freely expressed and your prayers fervently offered. Let me commend, in this context, other compatriots who have already thrown their hats in the Presidential ring for their courage and commitment. I want to commit before you that I will in the course of this campaign adhere to the highest standards of decorum, decency, and respect which Nigerians expect of their leaders. As we go along, I will have occasion to share even greater details about my vision for our national prosperity and progress, and the programme underpinning it without malice or ill will to any one.
- Finally, I wish to pay tribute to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari for his fatherly counsel all through the period that I have been privileged to work with him. I wish also to thank all our other living leaders who, in and out of office, continue quietly to labour for the unity and peace of the country. Above all, I want to thank the all Nigerian, male and female, young and old, worker and retiree who have refused to give up on the Nigerian dream. This is my pledge to you today, delivered before you and God: Together, we shall bring that dream to full fruition in our life time and it will blossom to the pride of all Nigerians and the admiration of the world. Let us join hands to commence the work required towards completing Nigeria’s unfinished Greatness. I’m ready. Are you? .
- God bless you. And God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

ADC Accuses National Assembly of Deliberately Frustrating Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2027 Polls
The African Democratic Congress has accused the National Assembly of deliberately frustrating critical electoral reforms by delaying passage of the Electoral Bill 2025, warning that continued inaction threatens the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Saturday by National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party specifically targeted the APC-led Senate for stalling the legislation and warned against weakening or diluting key provisions including electronic voter accreditation and results transmission.
The ADC’s accusation comes as civil society organizations and election observers express mounting alarm over the Senate’s failure to conclude action on a bill already passed by the House of Representatives at third reading on December 23, 2025.
According to Abdullahi, the deliberate delay appears designed to prevent the implementation of reforms that could level the electoral playing field and reduce opportunities for manipulation that characterized the 2023 general elections.
“We are calling on the National Assembly to urgently pass the Electoral Bill 2025. Continued delays could undermine critical electoral reforms and threaten the credibility of the 2027 elections,” the ADC spokesman stated.
The Senate inaugurated a seven-member ad hoc committee on Thursday to review, harmonize and streamline senators’ contributions to the proposed amendments, following a three-hour closed-door executive session examining the Electoral Act Repeal and Re-Enactment Bill.
However, the ADC and civil society groups argue that further committee work at this stage represents another delaying tactic when time-sensitive reforms require immediate legislative action.
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has joined ADC in condemning the delay, expressing grave concern that the Senate’s continued inaction undermines Nigeria’s electoral reform process and threatens timely preparations for the 2027 polls.
Situation Room noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission is legally required to issue the Notice of Election in February 2026, meaning any further slippage in passing the Electoral Bill could place the entire election cycle at risk.
The civil society coalition stressed that electoral reform is not routine legislation but a time-sensitive national obligation that requires urgent completion to allow INEC sufficient time to plan, implement and sensitize stakeholders under a revised legal framework.
The organization criticized the extended National Assembly recess extending into 2026 as inexcusable, noting that established democracies including the United Kingdom, United States, Kenya and South Africa maintain structured calendars allowing priority legislation to proceed even during recess periods.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently alleged that loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022 undermined the credibility of the 2023 general elections, stating that the law’s gaps enabled widespread rigging and made it extremely difficult for petitioners to win cases in court.
INEC had forwarded 142 post-election recommendations to the National Assembly in May 2025, with eight requiring constitutional or Electoral Act amendments, but lawmakers have shown limited urgency in addressing these technical concerns raised by the electoral umpire.
The Electoral Bill seeks to address critical deficiencies observed in recent elections, including clearer legal backing for electronic transmission of results, provisions for early voting, and tougher sanctions for electoral offenses.
Under current timelines, if the Senate fails to conclude action on the bill within the coming weeks, the proposed reforms will automatically lapse, meaning Nigeria would head into another election cycle under the same 2022 Electoral Act whose gaps and ambiguities were exposed during the 2023 polls.
The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre has also called on the National Assembly to fast-track critical legislative reforms, particularly electoral-related bills, emphasizing that electoral reform remains a core demand of Nigerian citizens following lessons from the 2023 general elections.
ADC warned that the APC government appears more focused on retaining power than implementing reforms that ensure free and fair elections, noting that even under the current timetable, incumbent structures at state and federal levels are already campaigning.
The party urged lawmakers to demonstrate leadership, foresight and patriotism by prioritizing electoral reforms that reflect the aspirations of Nigerians rather than partisan political calculations aimed at maintaining advantages for the ruling party.
Civil society organizations have vowed to intensify public pressure on the Senate to prioritize the Electoral Bill immediately upon resumption from recess, with plans for advocacy campaigns demanding accountability from lawmakers who continue to delay electoral reform legislation.

House of Reps Prepares to Honour Outgoing Clerk Yahaya Danzaria as Retirement Approaches February 8
The House of Representatives is preparing to honour its outgoing Clerk, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, as he approaches mandatory retirement from the National Assembly Service on February 8, 2026, after attaining the statutory retirement age.
The National Assembly Service Commission announced on January 21 the appointment of Kamoru Sidi as Acting Clerk of the House of Representatives effective February 9, 2026, to succeed Danzaria following his retirement.
Sidi, who previously served as Director of Administration in the National Assembly, brings extensive experience in parliamentary management and legislative operations to the position.
The Commission’s decision formally ends Danzaria’s tenure as one of the most transformative Clerks in the history of Nigeria’s lower legislative chamber, marking the conclusion of a distinguished career dedicated to strengthening parliamentary governance.
Dr. Danzaria, a native of Yelwa-Yauri in Kebbi State, has been widely praised for his professionalism, transparency and commitment to institutional excellence during his stewardship of the 10th House of Representatives.
Under his leadership, the House witnessed significant strides in administrative efficiency, including the comprehensive digitization of parliamentary documents and procedures that improved accessibility and transparency in legislative operations.
Colleagues and legislative experts have described Danzaria as the “unseen engine” of the parliament, whose behind-the-scenes work ensured the seamless operation of legislative machinery while lawmakers remained the visible faces of the institution.
His strategic thinking, meticulous planning and ability to bridge gaps among various stakeholders created an environment where legislative duties were executed with professionalism despite the complex administrative system governing the chamber.
Throughout his tenure, Danzaria maintained high standards of transparency and accountability, earning respect and admiration from lawmakers, administrative staff and the broader legislative community at a time when allegations of corruption and inefficiency have eroded public trust in governance.
A critical aspect of his legacy has been anticipating challenges and proactively addressing them, demonstrating deep understanding of the legislative agenda’s long-term implications while aligning the House’s administrative functions with its legislative priorities.
By fostering an environment focused on institutional re-engineering, Danzaria helped create a more efficient, responsive and citizen-centric parliament where lawmakers could concentrate on their primary mandate of legislating for national progress rather than being burdened by bureaucratic impediments.
His approach to bureaucratic reform ensured that administrative systems served as catalysts for meaningful change, supporting bills that enhanced national development and positioning the House for greater effectiveness in its constitutional responsibilities.
Lawmakers have credited Danzaria with providing invaluable guidance on legislative procedures, parliamentary ethics and institutional best practices, noting that his departure represents the loss of significant institutional memory and expertise.
The outgoing Clerk’s commitment to staff development was demonstrated through numerous training workshops focused on legislative work ethics, behavioural conduct and modern parliamentary practices aligned with global standards.
Danzaria consistently emphasized the importance of maintaining secrecy on official government documents, reminding staff that the 1962 Oath of Secrecy Act remains in force to demonstrate the premium placed on confidential information.
As his retirement approaches, tributes have poured in from across Nigeria’s political landscape, with many describing him as a rare public servant whose quiet but impactful contributions laid the foundation for a more prosperous and equitable society.
The House of Representatives is expected to hold a formal valedictory session before Danzaria’s departure, providing an opportunity for Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, principal officers and members to pay tribute to his exceptional service and dedication to parliamentary excellence.
Kamoru Sidi will inherit a well-organized and digitally-enhanced administrative structure, positioning him to build upon the solid foundation established by his predecessor while navigating the evolving challenges facing Nigeria’s legislature.

North Central Youths Launch Support Group for Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election With Hassan Atayoma as Chairman
North Central youths have unveiled a dedicated support platform endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections, adding another regional voice to the growing wave of youth mobilization across Nigeria.
The North Central Youths Support Group for Tinubu 2027 announced its formation alongside plans for a formal public inauguration scheduled to take place at the Tinubu Support Group Office at No. 2 Kainji Crescent, off Lake Chad Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
Former House of Representatives member Hassan Omale Atayoma will lead the organization as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, bringing legislative experience and familiarity with federal governance to the movement.
Atayoma, who currently serves as Executive Director of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, oversees programs linked to water resource management, agriculture and infrastructure development, experience that supporters believe will enhance the group’s administrative efficiency.
The organization has also appointed Comrade Isa Daniel (Prof) as Advisor. He presently serves as Deputy Director of Organising at the APC National Secretariat, a position associated with party coordination and nationwide mobilization.
Political backing for the initiative includes Hon. James Abiodun Faleke as Grand Patron, whose role is expected to provide mentorship, strategic counsel and national visibility for the youth movement.
Organizers have positioned the platform as a vehicle for youth-led advocacy, political engagement and grassroots mobilization across the North Central geopolitical zone comprising Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The group pledged commitment to peace, unity, democratic principles and policies aimed at economic growth, job creation and sustainable national development under Tinubu’s leadership.
The North Central endorsement follows a similar declaration by the Northern Nigeria Youth Leaders Forum, which raised ₦200 million to purchase President Tinubu’s APC nomination form for the 2027 elections.
At a high-level youth engagement held in Abuja on Monday, NNYLF National Leader Murtala Gamji announced that the forum had unanimously decided to support Tinubu’s second term, citing achievements in security, agriculture, infrastructure and youth empowerment.
“We believe in the unity of Nigeria and in the agreement that the South should complete its eight years before the North comes in,” Gamji stated, adding that northern youths would stand by President Tinubu as he completes a second term.
The ₦200 million cheque was presented to Director-General of the Tinubu Support Groups, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, who described it as a generous and impactful contribution demonstrating northern youth faith in the president’s leadership.
Similarly, Kogi State youths on Sunday presented a ₦100 million cheque to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to cover the cost of Tinubu’s APC presidential expression of interest and nomination forms.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Monday Aridaya Anebei, said the donation represents the collective resolve of young people across Kogi’s 21 local government areas to back President Tinubu for a second term.
Governor Ododo described the endorsement as neither emotional nor symbolic, but a deliberate and collective decision rooted in youth assessment of Tinubu’s leadership, citing gradual naira stabilization, increased food availability and improved fuel affordability.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria has also declared nationwide support for Tinubu, with President Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo pledging to mobilize 40 to 60 million youth votes to guarantee victory in 2027.
However, barely one week after its grand opening, part of Tinubu’s campaign office in Makurdi, Benue State, was demolished by officials of the Benue State Urban Development Board, sparking controversy and raising questions about the challenges facing pro-Tinubu mobilization efforts in some North Central states.
Despite the setback, organizers of the North Central Youths Support Group have expressed confidence that their grassroots network and leadership structure will effectively deliver the region’s youth vote for President Tinubu’s re-election.
