on

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have surged to 26th position in the latest FIFA World Ranking released on Monday, recording a remarkable 12-place jump from 38th following their impressive performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Eagles finished third at the continental tournament, winning six of their seven matches and losing only to host Morocco on penalties in the semi-finals. Nigeria sealed the bronze medal with a 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Egypt on Saturday after a goalless draw in regulation time.

The new ranking represents Nigeria’s best global position in over a decade and places them as the third-best team in Africa. AFCON finalists Senegal, who defeated Morocco to claim the title, are ranked 12th globally and top in Africa, while hosts Morocco sit eighth in the world ranking

Algeria and Egypt, both eliminated by Nigeria during the tournament, occupy fourth and fifth positions respectively on the African rankings.

The Super Eagles’ bronze medal performance at AFCON 2025 saw them dominate the group stage with three consecutive victories against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, before crushing Mozambique 4-0 in the Round of 16 and defeating Algeria in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria’s highest-ever FIFA ranking remains fifth, achieved in April 1994, while their average historical ranking stands at 39th. The team’s lowest ranking was 82nd.

Globally, Spain remains number one, followed by Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Croatia, completing the world’s top 10 teams.

The ranking boost comes as welcome news for Nigerian football fans, especially after the disappointment of missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles’ strong AFCON showing has restored confidence and positioned the team among Africa’s elite ahead of future competitions.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria ended their AFCON 2025 campaign on a high note after defeating Egypt on penalties to secure third place in the tournament.

The third-place playoff, played on Saturday, ended 0–0 after regulation time, with both sides cancelling each other out in a tense and physical encounter. As stipulated by CAF rules, the match went straight into a penalty shootout, where Nigeria emerged victorious 4–2.

Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the standout performer on the night, making two crucial penalty saves to swing the shootout in Nigeria’s favour. The Super Eagles kept their composure from the spot, with Ademola Lookman calmly converting the decisive kick to seal the bronze medal.

Throughout the game, Nigeria enjoyed better spells of possession and created the clearer chances, but Egypt’s defence stood firm, forcing the contest into penalties after 90 minutes of goalless action.

The victory continues Nigeria’s strong tradition in AFCON third-place matches, further reinforcing their reputation as consistent podium finishers on the continental stage.
