A suspected member of a motorcycle snatching syndicate has been arrested by policemen attached to the Igode Division in Ogun State.

The suspect, 28-year-old Wasiu Adebanjo, a resident of Malatori Area in Ogijo, was intercepted alongside two other members of the gang by Volunteer Neighborhood Watch (VNW) on August 23 at about 6:30pm, while attempting to carry out another operation.

Upon interception, the other two, identified as Opeyemi Olatoye and John Awoniyi, both armed with short cutlasses, fled the scene, while Adebanji, also clutching a short cutlass, was not as lucky as the other two fleeing members, and was successfully apprehended.

The police spokesperson for Ogun State Command (PPRO), SP Omolola Odutola, disclosed in a press statement that the timely intervention of a patrol team, led by the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), prevented the impending mob action on the suspect.

According to the PPRO, police preliminary investigations revealed that the three suspects were members of a well-organized syndicate that specialized in motorcycle snatching since March, 2023.

“Two BAJAJ motorcycles, suspected to be stolen, were successfully recovered from the residence of the arrested suspect”, the statement revealed, adding that investigation was ongoing to apprehend the two fleeing members of the syndicate.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Alamutu Abiodun Mustapha, while commending the bravery and swift action of the VNW as well as the timely intervention of the police patrol team, urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, for a safer and more secure environment for all.
