on

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps has cautioned corps members against engaging in partisan political activities as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections.

The NYSC boss reminded serving corps members of the scheme’s rules and regulations, stressing that they are expected to remain neutral and uphold the values of discipline, integrity, and national service throughout their service year.

According to him, corps members must not allow themselves to be used by politicians or political groups for activities that could compromise the neutrality of the scheme.

He emphasized that while corps members have constitutional rights as citizens, they are expected to avoid actions that may create the impression of political bias while serving under the NYSC programme.

The Director-General also urged participants to focus on their primary responsibilities, community development projects, and other activities designed to contribute positively to national growth.

He noted that the NYSC remains committed to promoting unity, patriotism, and peaceful coexistence among young Nigerians from different backgrounds.

The warning comes as political activities and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections continue to gain momentum across the country, with various parties and stakeholders beginning early preparations.

The NYSC leadership expressed confidence that corps members would remain law-abiding and continue to play constructive roles in nation-building while adhering to the principles of the scheme.

Police Rescue Woman Held in Chains for Over a Year by Older Brother in Abuja

The FCT Police Command has rescued a 36-year-old woman, identified as Ms. Grace Aniekuoku, who was allegedly chained and confined to a room by her brother, Mr. Chinedu Aniekuoku, for over one year and four months.

Confirming the rescue to journalists, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, stated that the command received a distress call regarding the victim’s condition on May 12.

Upon receiving the report, CP Sanusi immediately dispatched a team of detectives from the Katampe Division to the scene.

“Upon their arrival, the suspect (Chinedu Aniekuoku) was hostile and resisted the officers, refusing them access to the premises where he had confined his sister,” the CP stated. “This did not deter the police officers, who gained forceful entry into the room and discovered the victim in chains, in an extremely emaciated condition, and living in her own physical waste under very poor sanitary conditions.”

The police boss confirmed that Chinedu was promptly arrested, while the victim was rescued and rushed to a hospital by the police, where she is currently receiving medical attention.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had forcefully taken the victim’s son to an unknown location about two years ago. He subsequently placed his sister in confinement to prevent her from questioning the whereabouts of her child.

While Ms. Grace continues to undergo medical treatment, CP Sanusi assured that active efforts are being made to trace and rescue her missing son.

The suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Oil Plummets as Trump Announces Iran Peace Deal to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Global energy markets are in freefall after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a breakthrough deal with Iran to end the war and completely reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz.

In immediate response to the diplomatic breakthrough, Brent crude—the global oil benchmark—dropped sharply by 4.7% to $83.24 (£61.94) a barrel. Financial markets reacted with a massive sigh of relief, sending shares in Asia and Europe jumping as geopolitical tensions eased.

The historic agreement was reached with the help of Pakistan, which has served as a key mediator throughout the conflict. According to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the United States and Iran are scheduled to formally sign a memorandum of understanding in Switzerland this Friday. Trump further confirmed on Sunday that the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports would end, and promised that the Strait of Hormuz would be open “toll free.”

The resolution comes after a devastating three-month disruption to the global economy. The world has lost millions of barrels of oil and gas supply since the war closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint that handles a fifth of the world’s total oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.

Relief is expected to materialize over the coming weeks. According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency, the draft deal calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days under Iranian arrangements, paving the way for a full restoration of global energy trade.
